High-Tech Ride to the Ancient World

Fourth Leg - Bullet train ride and visit to Kyoto

The next leg of your journey will take you by bullet train to the cultural heart of Japan, the city of Kyoto.  When you are ready to leave the Shimizu/Shizuoka area you will need to make your way to Shizuoka station.  From the ferry terminal the easiest way to get to this station is by taxi (a less expensive alternative is the local train on the Shizutetsu line).  When you get to Shizuoka station you will need to purchase a bullet train (called Shinkansen in Japanese) ticket to the city of Kyoto.  You will have a choice between an express train (called Hikari) or a slower train which stops at most stations (called Kodama).  Additionally, you can purchase a reserved seat or take your chances with the open seating cars.  However, be aware that the Shinkansen is normally crowded and you may wind up standing all the way to Kyoto if you do not buy a reserved seat.  In addition, you can select a smoking or non-smoking car.  When riding the Shinkansen you will likely spot a snack cart making its way through the train.  If you are hungry for a snack, then we recommend a bag of squid jerky and a can of Japanese beer (beer and peanuts combination to the Japanese) to enjoy as you race along at 270 kilometers per hour.

When you arrive in Kyoto you are entering the true heart and soul of traditional Japan.  This ancient city was for millennia the capital of the Japanese emperor and the place where imperial patronage fostered and maintained a wealth of traditional Japanese arts.  The city was spared from bombing during the war and thus many old temples, shrines and other historic buildings remain to be seen and admired today.  There exist many high quality guide books and informative websites about Kyoto and its neighboring cities of Nara, Osaka and Kobe, which collectively are part of the greater Japanese Kansai area.  Because so much high quality tourist information already exists for this area we will simply refer you to some good resources from which you might study and plan for your stay.  Please see the links below as a jumping off point into the fascinating world that is the Kansai area of Japan.  Click here or on the button below to go to the next leg of your journey.
