Oden
Oden
(pronounced oh-den)
is a stew-like Japanese food popular throughout Japan though rarely seen outside
this country. Consisting of chunky bits of vegetables, whole boiled eggs,
fish meal and skewered meat, Oden is served at home from a large pot
placed in the middle of the table and in restaurants from specially designed
cookers positioned in conspicuous view to tempt hungry patrons. To enjoy
Oden one must first select the items to eat before removing them from the
cooker and placing them on a plate. Spicy mustard called Karashi is
then used (in small quantities) to bring extra life to the meal! Oden
can be eaten as a meal in itself or as an appetizer with other foods.
