Daikon - Japanese Radish

If you've ever visited a Japanese supermarket then you may recall spotting an impressive pile of extra-large white radish for sale in the vegetable section.  These jumbo radish are called daikon in Japanese and are notorious for their delicious taste and formidable size.  Daikon can grow up to 3 feet long and tip the scales at 100 pounds!  However, they are usually harvested before they weigh more than 5 pounds.  Daikon are an essential ingredient in Japanese cooking where the root's sweet, zesty flavor enhances many meals.  Daikon is one of the items commonly seen for sale in Japan from roadside stalls where farmers sell their produce directly to their neighbors.  This impressive and useful root is also known by the names Japanese radish, Chinese radish and Satsuma radish.
